Data Destruction Policy
Secure, compliant data sanitization for individuals, businesses, clinics, and IT providers.
1. Data Destruction Methods
We provide secure data sanitization aligned with NIST 800-88 rev. 1, offering two wipe levels and physical destruction when required.
Standard Wipe (No Certificate)
A NIST-aligned wipe for customers who do not require documentation.
Certified Wipe (NIST 800-88 rev. 1)
A compliant wipe with a full Certificate of Data Destruction, including device serials and verification results. Ideal for businesses, clinics, and MSPs.
Physical Destruction (As Needed)
If a storage device cannot be wiped due to failure or damage, we perform physical destruction to ensure the data is permanently unrecoverable.
2. Wipe Procedure (NIST 800-88 rev. 1)
Our wiping tools perform:
Full-volume overwrite using NIST-approved sanitization methods
A verification pass to confirm successful completion
Serial number logging (for Certified wipes)
An integrity check ensuring the wipe was not interrupted
Logging of wipe duration and environment details
This provides sanitization suitable for HIPAA-aligned disposal and MSP audit requirements.
3. Certificates of Data Destruction
Certified wipes include a detailed certificate containing:
Customer or business name
Device make, model, and serial number
Sanitization method used
Verification results
Wipe start time, completion time, and total duration
Disk attributes and storage metadata
System environment used during erasure
Technician name and signature
These certificates are suitable for medical, legal, nonprofit, business, and MSP reporting.
4. On-Site Wiping Option
For customers who prefer all wiping to occur at their location:
Standard or Certified wipes available
Devices never leave your premises
Includes on-site witnessing
$100 per device (minimum $200 per visit)
On-site wiping is ideal for medical offices, clinics, and organizations with strict privacy requirements.
5. After Data Is Destroyed
After data sanitization is complete, devices are handled responsibly:
Recycled using R2-style responsible downstream practices
Refurbished with securely wiped or replaced storage
Salvaged for reusable components to reduce e-waste
No data-containing device leaves our possession until it has been securely wiped or destroyed.
6. Compliance Notes
While T.R.S. Recycling is not a HIPAA Business Associate, our Certified wiping option provides:
NIST 800-88 rev. 1 compliant sanitization
Documentation suitable for HIPAA-aligned device disposal
A clear chain-of-custody for audit or reporting needs
We also support MSPs and IT providers through backend certified and standard data destruction services.
